About Kapitein Kalk

Geertje Kapteijns (1980) is a visual artist, living in Dordrecht (NL).
When her children attended a Steiner Waldorf school, she was also introduced to the way in which the seasons and annual festivals are celebrated and how children are able to be children during childhood. This has proved to be a huge source of inspiration. She started making chalkboard drawings and over time she released them as cards. The cards are small works of art that encourage a conscious reflection on a certain time of the year or event and the feeling that goes with that. Drawings that make you look forward to remembering a beautiful moment.

There is something magical about a chalkboard drawing. Because of the black background you not only apply colour when you start drawing, but also light. Chalk as a material is vulnerable but also very flexible, you can make quick impressions with it, but you can also work with it in great detail. The board drawings are transient, and eventually become again. But this also creates space for a new drawing.

Geertje uses Mercurius chalkboard chalk for all her chalkboard drawings.

Waldorf Spring and its celebrations

When the dew awakens and the light returns
Cuckoo’s flower in Grandma’s garden, bird sounds all around
Little chick in my coat pocket – to show at school – just this once
Spring bestows great treasures, my child’s heart almost too small

In Spring, you encounter new life. Waking up to morning light, sprouting plants and spring flowers. A time of transitions and transformations and fertility. Elements that return in the Waldorf celebrations of Easter and Pentecost.

Waldorf Summer and its celebrations

Long warm evenings, glowing of sun and play
The sand is warm between my toes, feeling fearless and free
The day is full of friendship, adventure and delight
I did not know you, yet it seems like we have always been this way

Summer is a time of letting go and allowing yourself to be carried away by the blossoming nature around you. The daily obligations and worries may be forgotten for a while. Just as you process your day during the night and give your experiences a place in the morning, so is summer a time to let all that you have learned sink in. So that, after the summer, you will be well rested and with new insights, you will be able to pick up your daily life again.

Waldorf Autumn and its celebrations

The autumnal wind is howling courage and wistfullness
Golden splendour and autumn’s tear
Our pockets full with October’s treasures
Homeward bound through wind and rain

Autumn is a season of farewells. Changing scents in the air, mushrooms and falling leaves. Increasingly long shadows and fiery autumn colours. The days are rapidly getting shorter and with the approach of nature’s winter sleep, we bid farewell to the warmth and exuberance of summer in all its splendour. It is time to wake up from the summer slumber and to find one’s own strength again. We seek out life indoors again.

Waldorf Winter and its celebrations

The morning dark and quiet, the world in white and blue
White frost crackling as the town still sleeps, but you are on your way
Passing by homes, warmly longing for candle and togetherness
Brimming with light and expectation, no longer me but we

Winter is a season of reflection. The energy of the earth has turned inwards where new life is unfolding. A beautiful mirror, which encourages us to stop and pause and let the experiences of the past year sink in. What has the past year taught us and what are the things that are really important? With which new insights and hopes do we step into the New Year?
